I am going to build a new machine that allows for SATA drives. However, I
will only be using ATAPI to begin with. Should I go ahead and install the
SATA drivers prior to initial Windows XP installation, or is later OK?
Thanks

Unless you use 2 SATA drives in a RAID configuration initially, the drivers
arent
needed in xp,if you set up xp with 2 in RAID,the drivers must be installed
before
installing xp by booting to xp cd.Then youd continue on and install xp.

You can put IDE and SATA together in a system. If you want
to use SATA as a slave.

If you're going to use SATA (1 SATA), as a master with XP
it doesn't need the drivers. XP will still install on it. (if you boot from
the CD).

BUT if you have more than 1 SATA hard drive (if you're
going to use RAID 0, or 1, or other), then you need / have to install
the drivers by pressing F6, when the XP setup screen appears (from
booting from the XP CD).
