SATA drive problems

Using WinXP Pro on an MSI 865PE Neo2 mobo with P4 2.4GHz (533) processor,
one 120gb Seagate ST3120026AS internal SATA drive and one external (USB 2)
Seagate 120gb ST312002 2A drive.

Problem is the SATA drive is only giving me a score now of 29,600 under
Sandra File System performance and the external drive is 23,787.

The SATA drive used to deliver a test result of 48,000 under Sandra test.

Anyone able to give me a clue as to what may have gone wrong here?

Appreciate advice.

Is it a different version of sandra?

Have you made any H/D driver changes between the two results?

I've never had a good score on any H/D rating using sandra's figures. I
don't where they get their figures from but they never seem to be anywhere
near reality.

Nothing has changed in my system. Still using Sandra 2003. Sandra may not be
the best benchmark program around but it is the one I have consistently used
so at least I have a yardstick by which I can measure the performance of my
machine.

If the drive became defagmented it would speed up file access.
Perhaps the files are fragmented and spread out all over the disk.
You may need to run windows defrag.
Its also possible you had other things running durring the test
and that slowed things down. Another possibility is the disk is
having troubles and having to retry sector reads, thus slowing it down.
Reboot and go to Setup and turn on S.M.A.R.T. if its available, also ensure
the pio/dma/udma settings are correct and 32 bit accesses are enabled.
(Do NOT change the CHS/LBA access mode or be prepared to reformat)

Because sandra is a pile of poo.

"If the drive became defagmented it would speed up file access".???

Is this really true?

It is surprising how often a person in the throes an intense posting
experience will drop the all-important "not," on which their entire argument
depends. Even smart people do this!
