SATA drive on a PATA motherboard

I'm getting an adaptor so that my Serial ATA hdd will plug into my Parallel
ATA motherboard but was wondering about the jumper settings. The hdd
manufacturer website says that jumper settings don't need to be set with
SATA drives but do they need to be if put through an adaptor?

Much better to get a SATA conttroller, than an IDE-SATA adapter.

Really depends on how the adapter is done.

If it uses the cable select system, there is no need for a jumper.

The SATA to IDE (motherboard) adapter will likely be working
at 1.5Gbit/sec. The SATA hard drive should come from the factory
with the jumpers set for 1.5Gbit/sec. You should be able to
connect it and use it immediately.

If it does not work, then inspect the hard drive, to see if the
label mentions a jumper that selects 1.5 or 3.0Gbit/sec. Set
it to 1.5Gbit/sec.

Also, if you manage to get this thing working, and the adapter
has a chip on it labelled JM20330, I'd be curious as to how
well it works. That is the only chip I am aware of so far,
that does that translation. Someone else pointed out some
cheap translator products that are only sold on Ebay, and
I was thinking this might be the chip used:

It's a DiamondMax 10 160GB and I'm using something similar to :

The diagram on the disk shows the setting as [xxoo] for the 1.5GB setting
with a (J4 PARTIAL) description. But it is currently at [ooxx] so I assume
that is for 3GB? Would I need to move the tab to the left - [xxoo] - if I'm
using a SATA to IDE adaptor?

Try it with the factory jumper setting first. If the BIOS screen
does not show an entry with the Maxtor brand name on the screen,
then the device might not be recognized. In that case, I'd be more
interested in changing the jumper.

There has been some confusion on the 1.5/3.0 Gbit jumpers before,
and rather than wasting time on it, I would assume the factory
setting is correct and work with that. In the past, disks have
shipped with incorrect labelling, so only get interested in
the jumpers if it isn't working :)
