I have a samsung hard drive from an e-machine that quit. I can not install
the drive on my existing gateway. the connectors are not the same. I would
like to recover the files from the old hard drive onto the gateway. any
suggestions would be really appreciated.

The connectors are different? How? Would you mind describing
the cables? AFAIK, both use e-Machines and Gateway supply IDE
hard drives.

What is the model of the eMachine the drive came from?

connector the gateway small. thanks.

Well then use a cable that fits. Doesn't the motherboard have SATA and IDE
connectors?

If the mobo lacks IDE then you can look at putting the ATA drive in an
external USB enclosure and get at the data that way. Of course that will
cost you a few bucks, but will be a useful device to have.

From checking Gateway's site, it looks like the newer computer has SATA
hard drives. You can purchase an IDE to SATA adapter or a USB 2.0 to IDE
ATA converter to make the older hard drive useable in the newer computer.
However, I see that the Gateway also has a choice of various DVD drives,
more than likely they are EIDE, and perhaps the hard drive could be
temporarily partnered up with the EIDE the DVD drive uses in order to get
the data off.
