Hi, I've spent about 6 days on this issue. Beginning to go crazy.

We have a mixed ME, XP, 98SE network of 8 PC's.
The new XP machine (Jane) hosts an access database.

If all PC's are turned on B4 the XP server then XP (Jane) allows them all to
access it.

If a PC is tunred on after then XP denies it access. (each other PC can see
and access each other)

I have read a lot of the discussion threads in this group. I have referred
to the K/Base and just nothing fixes this annoying problem.

here is the ipconfig for the Server (Jane). Please help!

NB we have a router that issues (DCHP) ip addresses, but until XP this was
never an issue so I do not think it is involved.

Is Jane (server) XP Pro or Home? Home only allows 5 concurrent
connections while Pro allows 10. This does not mean 5 or 10
*computers*. One computer can make more than one connection to a
server. Offhand, it sounds to me like you are running into this
limitation and should consider replacing the XP on Jane with a server
operating system.

Dear Malke
thank you for your useful reply.
I searched the KB and it said XP Home allows 10 connections at one time.
Has Microsoft changed this?
Both ME and 98 allowed what seemd like unlimited connects. It seems a big
unfair upgrading to find it sends you backwards??

In any case I guess I must upgrade to XP Pro. Is this correct. We have 11
PC's on the network + 1 router. Or are you saying Pro will also limit the
full network.

Note that at the moment I can actually connect 6 pc's to the XP home server
(+ the router).

Again thanks for your useful comments.

Uh, you read it wrong. XP Pro allows 10 concurrent inbound connections;
XP HE only allows 5. In most cases, a PC only uses 1 connection --
regardless of the number of files/printers is opens.

Yes, as Bob Willard has said, HE can only allow 5 concurrent connections
and Pro only 10. It definitely sounds like you need a server operating
system.
