If there's a small arrow pointing to the left in the notification area of your
Taskbar, click on it. It's possible that the Safely Remove Hardware icon is
hidden.

If it's not there, here's a temporary fix.

Go to Start -> Run and copy and paste this command in the Open box.

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

If you can't find a permanent solution to this problem then you can create a
shortcut on your Desktop using the above command as the target. Once you've
created the new shortcut, drag it to the Quick Launch toolbar on your Taskbar.

Good luck

I am not sure if what I have done in this situation is good practice but I
have occassionally gone into the task manager then applications and ended
the program.

Thanks Nepatsfan,
I disconnected my camera just fine & I did the solution you suggested. But
funny cause the other day I plugged a cordless mouse USB receiverand & its
been plugged in for days now. I decided today that I would take this mouse
home so I wanted to disconnect it but the little arrow wasnt on the bottom
(which let me add that It has been there before and I know it exists and
have used it;
So again I copy an pasted in "run" >%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe
shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll........However, there was nothing
showing at all in the hardware box that I could disconnect
I have as I stated, a USB receiver for my cordless mouse plugged into my PC.
I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that I have it (USB
receiver) plugged into the back of my tower.
thanks for your help

Your cordless USB mouse can be unplugged safely at any time.

The mouse doesn't show up in the Safely Remove Hardware dialog because it's not
a storage device. Your camera has a storage component. That's why it shows up in
the list of items displayed in Safely Remove Hardware. Any USB device that can
be used to store data will be listed.
