safely remove hardware icon persists

running winXP sp2

every time I reboot (which i cannot do without the PC freezing on the blue
screen o' death and me hitting the off button, but that's another issue),
anyhow everytime i reboot an icon comes up in the systray that says I can
safely remove my com21 cable modem. but I dont want to. I am using it. why
does this come up, and more importantly how do I stop the icon/wizard from
showing up?

thanks,

It's there in case you want to disconnect. Leave it alone. Don't try to fix
something that's not broken. I would be more worried about the BSOD problem
you're having than a tiny icon in your systray if I were you.

The way I look at is you might spend hours/weeks trying to fix it and not
come up with the solution or hours reformatting installing XP, cleaning up,
and then installing SP 2, preferably from the CD. Personally, I prefer the
for sure way if trying to fix something like that if it ends up taking
longer than an hour or two and I still haven't sorted it out and can't get
an easy solution from someone else. YMMV.
