Safely Remove Hardware icon again...

Hello..
Does anyone know what the consequences are if a PC user does not use the
"Safely Remove Hardware" little green icon feature in Windows XP ? Is there
any damage to the system eventually ?

Its not the sys so much as the device thats connected.
ie if the device is unplugged whilst a read/write operation is in progress
you may finish up with a corrupt file or worst ways an unreadable device
