Safely Remove Hardware Error

When I try to disconnect a USB device, I get this error: "The device
'generic volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again
later". No matter how long I wait, I still get this error message when I try
to disconnect a device. There are no processes accessing the usb device as
it's a 'remote storage' device and is used only when I send data to it. When
the device is being accessed there is a red flashing light but this doesn't
exist.
Is there anything in WinXP Pro that needs to be reinstalled to allow me
to use the Safe Removal function?

Although nothing may still be written to the device, is
it running off Windows Explorer? If so, then close Windows
Explorer. And as for a remote or removable storage device,
it might be worthwhile to turn off the cache, or delay-write,
thereby forcing the computer to write the entire file at once
instead of holding parts of it in cache to be flushed later.

Remove the "generic volume" and the USB device listed in Device Management.
Then, re-connect the USB device, to the same USB port. This should "fix" the
drivers.

Your suggestion 'almost' fixed the issue. I am able to disconnect the
device, and get a 'bell indicator' and it no longer appears if I click on
the 'safe remove' icon. Previously I got a 'flash screen' that told me "it
is now safe to remove the device", or something similar, but this doesn't
appear anymore.. I watched the USB 'ports' in the Device Manager the USB
driver listing went from 'normal' to one with an exclamation mark when I
used the 'safely remove hardware' icon. I understand the icon change and
when I disconnected the device, the driver disappeared.
