safe mode

I cannot get into safe mode by tapping the f8 key during
bootup. Have also tried to press it continuously and
still it does not happen. Right now I am caught in a
loop. The first two screens show up and then I get a
message with options due to incorrect boot up. It
highlights boot normally and I cannot pick another choice
with the arrows. Then it says it will start windows in 30
seconds. I briefly see the logo followed by a blue error
screen and it starts the reboot again. Can't get out of
it.

This is also Posted in your other post on the same problem
(assuming you are the same "Carol" that is!)

Hi,
Some suggestions:

1- In SETUP Try Changing the Boot order to start from the
Harddrive first.

2- http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310396
"Windows XP Logon Screen Does Not Appear & the Computer
Continuously Restarts"

3- Go to: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545
"How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry That Prevents
Windows XP from Starting

Look on this page for more links:
http://aumha.org/win5/kbstrtup.php
"KNOWLEDGE BASE LINKS STARTUP & BOOT LOG"

If none of those suggestions look like they will work try
this:
++++++++
Go to Bootdisk.com
On the: "BootDisks - PC Support - Essential Utilities" page
Click on the Link for: "WINDOWS AND DOS BOOT DISKS"
On the: "Boot Disks" page; in the "Windows XP Bootdisk
Sets" section:
Click the Link for: "WHATEVER VERSION OF XP YOU HAVE"
That'll take you where you can download (from M$) a file
so you can make a boot disk set that will allow you to
access the CD-ROM drive and reinstall XP.

Are you using a usb mouse and keyboard? If so you may have to switch to a
ps2 keyboard. usb doesn't usually work until you get into windows.

I'm interested in any response you get
This same thing is happening with my husbands computer
right now, unfortunately he's out of the country and I can
only try to help him via telephone
I'm also at a loss here, we've tried everything
btw, he was also using Norton when this occured

It sounds like you have been infected with the Blaster worm.

If you did not have your patches from the Windows Update
current and you were on the Internet you can become
infected. The worm can be stopped if as soon as you boot,
you press CTRL/ALT/DEL, look at processes and shit Blaster
down.

Then you can download the virus removal tool, I recommend
STINGER from McAfee-NAI

My apologies for sending two similar messages. I was
trying to rephrase to make it more understandable. I did
change out the mouse as suggested and can get into safe
mode or last configuration now. It loads up drivers, etc
in safe but then goes into the reboot cycle. I tried alst
config but I get the blue screen right after the logo so
fast I can't read any part of it. I read xp annoyances
and there are lots of suggestions but they all assume I
can access the computer. None of it will work because I
can't get out of the loop. I was not on the web when it
happened and my virus NAV is up to date and running. I
will try some of the other suggestions here. I put the cd
as first boot, hard drive as third. I have two cds
listed. I downloaded on my husband's computer the floppy
start up from a site. I have not opened them and put them
on the floppies. What happens to my data when I do this?
About all I have backed up on zip is my quick books. I
have been reading the tutorials on using Argentum or Nero
for data back up. I just have not been able to get them
on cd rw yet and my zip is only 100 mb(?). On cd I get a
too big response and have not figured how to get it small
enough. Can you tell I don't totally know what I am doing?
