Hi,
Timing is everything. Too early and you might lock up the POST, too late and
it won't work. The time to hit F8, sometimes repeatedly, is that point where
the BIOS passes control of the boot to the hard drive. Generally this is
immediately after the initial POST ends (something that is often covered by
manufacturer splash screens), and immediately before the OS begins loading -
once it has started, it's too late.
