Safe Mode

My son kept shutting the laptop w/o powering down and now it starts in safe
mode. The first time I rebooted and this solved the problem but now that
won't work. I can't get it to go back to normal. This has happened in the
past but I can't remember what I did to fix it.

Help!

Thanks.

The operating system is most probably corrupted. The first thing to do if
you haven't already is back up your data. Since you can get into Safe Mode,
copy the data onto an external hard drive or USB thumb drive (depending on
its size) so that if Something Goes Terribly Wrong you will have your
precious stuff.

Next, try Vista's equivalent of a Repair Install:

Repair A Vista Installation Using The Upgrade Option Of The Vista DVD -

For people who only have a restore image - Windows Vista Recovery Disc
Download:

If the above doesn't work, I'm afraid you'll need to return the computer to
factory condition using whatever method your laptop mftr. provided. Refer
to your manual or the laptop mftr.'s tech support website for instructions
for your specific model machine.

Oh, and don't let your son do that any more!

Good luck,

Malke

Either don't let the son do that or set the power options to shut down Vista
when the lid is closed. I have found that it's a great option.

most people don't power down their laptops before closing the lid ?
is it not going into standby when the lid closes? does your battery then
run out?

try using system restore, if you have an restore point before the "safe
mode" dilemma, if not boot into safe mode, put in your Vista DVD and
either repair, or "upgrade" to the same version you have now.

Then go into your power settings and see what's going on when the lid is
closed.
