Runtime errors

G

Gracie

Every time I click a link I get an Error window that
tells me I have a runtime error. The lines are always
different, and the error message is sometimes "'null' is
null or not an object" or "Object required" or "[pick a
word] is undefined"

HELP!! Is there a way to fix this?

Hi Gracie :)

It is likely you have parasites, spyware, adware, malware, or hijackware on
your system causing the problem, which your antivirus will not detect, as it
does not have the same definitions. Download and install, then you *MUST*
update the programs prior to running to be sure they have the latest
definitions, then run the programs below. They are free and very effective.
Be sure to run both SpyBot and Adaware, as what one does not detect the
other may. It is important that you do all the steps and follow all
directions carefully:

You can go to the links below to check your system for parasites
http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/parasite.htm

IMPORTANT:
Before trying to remove spyware, download a copy of LSPFIX from
the URL below - some malware may kill your internet connection when it is
removed, this program will enable you to regain your connection.
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

It is important that you run the programs in the order that they are listed
here. The first three programs will clear your machine of all other items so
that you can have a clear HiJackThis Log for the experts to read and analyze
for you.

(NOTE: If you can not download these programs from the Internet, if your PC
has CD read capabilities, go to another computer with CD-ROM burning
capabilities. Create a folder on the hard drive of the other computer called
HOLD, download the programs to that folder, then burn that folder to a CD.
Copy the HOLD folder to your HD and then install the programs from there
and run them. After you have IE access again, update all programs where
possible to get the latest definitions and run them again to be sure there
are no lingering items on the system.

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so DO NOT fix
anything yet.

Open the copy of your log in NotePad and make a copy. Then you can go here

analyze the log and report back the results. Please allow at least a few
hours or a days time for a response, depending on when you post the log

Remember, you must return to the HJT site to get your answer. It is a good
idea to click the "Notify" box so that you will get an electronic
notification by e-mail to let you know when a response has been posted.
But, you must still return to the site of your answer

Hi Gracie :)

this and they said they are referring it back to you.
What do I do from here?

You might try the following and see if it will help.

Run Time Errors - Courtesy of Henri Leboeuf:

Common script errors messages can be eliminated by Clicking:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options. 3. In the Internet Options
dialog box, click Advanced.
4. Click to select the Disable script debugging check box.
5. Click to clear the Display a notification about every script error check
box.
6. Click OK.

Get this if still no joy:
Microsoft's Scripting download
Get the latest. Two download versions are available for Windows Script 5.6.
The first version requires Windows 2000, XP; the second version requires
Microsoft Windows 98, Millenium Edition (Me), or NT 4.0.
Choose the download appropriate for your operating system.

Hi Jan :)

That helped... I am no longer getting the errors when I
click on web page links. But now... sigh... I am getting
a different error. This occurs when I am at a website and
click on a link that loads a pdf. When I X out, I get
this...

IEXPLORE.EXE - Application Error
The instruction at "0x04d9f45b" referenced memory
at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".

Then when I click OK to get out, instead of crashing IE
as it was doing in the past, it now HANGS (frankly, I'd
rather have the crash... it lets me move forward faster).

So... the saga continues. I like Henri's "still no joy"
so at least I am working through this problem with a
smile on my face.

thanks...

Ok, Smiley, glad you're hanging in here. :)) You didn't list what OS you
are using, so try these and see if they help.

I'm running IE 6.0 on XWP Pro.

Tried your recommendation.... no joy yet.

'k...I'm not ignoring you, but, I have a couple of things I want to check on
and it will take a bit of research. I'll get back to you soon. So, stay
tuned. Don'ya touch'a da channel!! :))

Hi Gracie :)
I'm running IE 6.0 on XWP Pro.

Tried your recommendation.... no joy yet.

Ok...I have done a bit more research and brain tapping on this error issue,
and this is the results, recommended by Rameshs and Jim Eshelman:

Accordingly, it wouls seem that the Adobe Acrobat browser Plugin or it's
Browser Helper Object (AcroIEHelper.dll) is probably causing the error.
Because BHOs load in same memory space as IE, it appears to the user that IE
has generated the error

Try the information below and let's see if it will help.

The suggestion that would offer the best results is to uninstall Adobe
Acrobat Reader, reboot the computer, then install a fresh copy of Adobe
Acrobat Reader.

It's me again... still no joy. I uninstalled Adobe
Acrobat Standard 6.0, and also uninstalled Adobe
Photoshop Elements 2.0 thinking it might have something
goofy that was interacting. I reinstalled both, and the
problem remains, but when I get the error now, it is back
to crashing IE instead of hanging (mea culpa... I wished
for that).

In the meantime, I received a new post from the aumha
forum, and followed their suggestions. First was to go to
a link that would pull up info on my machine... I am
pasting it here for you also....

Browser Name: Microsoft Internet Explorer ver. 6.0
Browser & OS: (Major & Minor Version Information)
4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR
1.1.4322; MSN 9.0; MSNbVZ02; MSNmen-us; MSNcOTH; MPLUS)
;SP1;Q837009;Q832894;Q831167;
Screen Resolution: 1024 x 768
Color Depth: undefined
Java Enabled: true

Per his recommendation, I updated my virus defs (nothing
new), enabled Show Hidden Files, booted into Safe Mode
and ran a full system scan. No infections found. I ran a
new HJT log while in safe mode, and sent it to him. I can
send it to you if you want it... it's pretty long so I
didn't paste it in here.

This problem isn't keeping me from being able to use the
internet, so the timeline on getting it resolved isn't
critical, but I work with pdf's a lot so I can't work
around it forever.

Thanks for being so helpful!!!!!!

You're very welcome. I have a feeling that your problem is more complicated
than my realm of knowledge can accommodate, thus, I think you would be much
better advised and have a better chance of getting a suitable solution to
your problem by working with those who are assisting you on the AumHa
Forums. They are all much more knowledgeable than I in the areas that your
problem may require for proper resolution. We managed to get you past the
one stumbling block, and I'm sure Robear and the others at AumHa will be
able to get you back on par with the PDF sites.

Thank you very much for your patience. I wish you good luck. :)

Hi Gracie :)
Thanks Jan.... If I ever get it pinpointed, I'll let you
know.

You're very welcome! Please do let us know how you get it resolved. Not
only I would be very interested to know, but, it will benefit other readers
as well. :)

I'm baa-aack.

I talked to Robear at auhma.org and he said he felt sure
it was an Adobe problem. I uninstalled and reinstalled
very carefully and was still having the problem, and
since Robear thought it was Adobe, I went to the Adobe
site and posted the problem on their forum. The forum
isn't monitored by any professionals... it is just user-
to-user, so I was going to be a little reluctant to try
any fixes that might be suggested, but... alas... I
didn't have to make that decision. No suggestions
offered. There were so other people that responded though
and said they have been having the same problem. Seems
like it is pretty prevalent, and one responder said it is
an incompatibility issue between IE and Adobe and he
knows it occurred after a recent IE update. I couldn't
agree or disagree... I update constantly but don't really
pay attention to what is being updated or patched.

So... sorry for running on like this... one guy said the
only way it would get fixed is for me to call Adobe. I
did, and spoke to a person in tech support. He ran me
through a bunch of different things (mainly going into
Adobe/Edit/Preferences/Internet and trying different
combinations of options. Nothing fixed it. Some combos
made it worse. The tech guy at Adobe said that based on
what he was seeing, it was definitely an IE problem.

So... still no joy. What now??

G

Gracie

Hey Jan!

I fixed it. Nah... not really. I loaded Mozilla and it
works fine with Mozilla, so I know it is definitely an IE
problem. I just I will just use Mozilla when I am doing
the kind of things that I know will take me to pdfs.

Will Microsoft address the incompatibility issue
eventually?

Thanks... again and again.

Gracie
