When I try to open Word documents, sometimes from e-mail attachments or from
web based programs, I get a message such as "a runtime error has occurred and
has caused this program to terminate in an unusual way" How can I correct
this?

How can I correct this?

That depends on the application being associated with the affected file
extension (eg. *.doc). Why don't you save the attachment to disk, then
open from the local drive by doubleclick in order to narrow down the
problem.
