I do disk cleanup, defrag, spybot search & destroy and delete temp internet
files on a daily basis. Yet, my computer is getting slower every day. My
questions is this. I only have 20% ram available out of 312mb. Could
that
be my problem? I have a 750mhz Duron processor and a 30 gb hard drive.
It
literally takes 30 seconds to turn a page.
How much RAM is free is not relevant. In fact you don't want any free RAM.
You want the OS to be using all the RAM possible. XP's memory management
will free up RAM that is allocated for other uses when a program needs it.
This an old myth that still persists in XP. So forget about trying to free
up RAM.
Now it might be that your system would benefit by having more RAM. That
would be the case if the page file is currently being used extensively.
More RAM will be of benefit if it significantly reduces the size of the page
file. However, if in your current use pattern, if the page file is not
being used much, then more RAM won't help.
Here is a link to a great article by the late Alex Nichol, MVP on Virtual
Memory in XP and setting the page file. In it is a link to a utility to
monitor actual page file use. Run that for a while to see how much your
system is using the page file. That will give you an indication of whether
additional RAM will help.
