PA or any other experts, I installed SP3 on Tuesday or Wednesday, 05/13 or
05/14. I noticed that scrolling was jerky with FireFox and I'net Explorer
7.0 but until today had not tried to fix it. This morning, I plugged in the
iPod classic to charge while I tried to figure out what was going on. The
scrolling was the same, jerky, and nothing helped so I decided to back-out
SP3 as the PC was working fine before SP3. The Uninstall worked fine-at
least superficially-until the reboot. At that time Windows started but only
the background appeared, no icons for the desktop. A second reboot had the
same results. I then thought of disconnecting the iPod and the machine
booted normally, icons and all. Since I had a CD already burned and not
copied to iTunes, I opened that and found out that it would not see the iPod
while My Computer recognized the it. Starting up Task Manager, I was able to
see that every time the iPod was plugged in, the applications running
(iTunes, Windows Explorer) would go from a "Running" to a "Not Responding"
state. I performed the 5 R's that Apple recommends with no success.
Figuring that the SP3 uninstall had not cleaned out everything, I went back
to a previous Restore date-unfortunately, I picked the wrong date and spent
an hour or so spinning my wheels. Eventually I went back to May 1st and
things are now working as they are supposed to. So far the iPod has 1.53 GB
of 30.GB reloaded.

My machine runs an AMD 2500+ processor with an Nvidia graphics chip. There
is 1 GB RAM. The machine is non-OEM as I upgraded to XP in the distant past
from Windows 95.

In my opinion, something is hosed regarding SP3 and USB ports even though
the other ports seemed to be recognized. I did not test the printer or
scanner though, so my opinion on whether they are working may be optimistic.

While I am now working as far as I can tell; I would appreciate it f you can
get the word to someone at MS to test to see if it was just one of those
things or is there a latent problem.

Best of wishes,

Billy

Assuming (1) iTunes was working properly (not getting the error) before you
installed SP2 *and* (2) you installed SP3 properly, I'd open a free support
incident:

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada.
