Running in circles on update

I'm not sure whther or not this is the correct place to ask this
question, but the forum title seemed the most appropriate.

I am running windows xp home on an acer aspire notebook.

I recently did an update through update.microsoft.com.

It worked fine, but when I went in a second time to check for updates
that the updates may have needed, I got a message saying that the
software needed for the update was no longer installed or registered.

I have followed the instructions numberous times, disconnected and
reconnected, rebooted and reinstalled, and I continue to have the same
problem. The site continues to tell me the update software is no
longer installed or registered and puts me back into the circle.

Any ideas how to fix this or where to find the information to fix it.

I have tried searching the KB and the Internet for an answer.

Thank you
