running an application under windows xp and having read only error

Okay, I am having some problems with windows xp. When an application is
installed on the computer, the directories are shown as read only when you
check the properties of the directory.

I ran a program called rockwell utilities (a set of seismic map
applications). When the application attempts to generate a 2D map from the
information provided, the process will run for a few minutes and then crash
with error 57 I believe (trying to access a read only file or trying to
create a file or sub directory in a read only directory). Anyway, the user
that runs this application logs in as himself. As I said before all
directories that he has access to is listed as read only.

I am assuming that the user does not have admin rights as all directories
that he can see or create are marked as read only in the properties area.
Does the user have to have admin rights to keep the files/directories from
becoming read only. If this is the case, why is the directory or file marked
as read only. I checked all the users in the company and their windows xp
pro/home machines (there are three pro machines here and two home machines)
and all the directories and files that I checked were marked as read only
even when I created a new file or directory. I did the windows xp pro
installs a few months ago and I don't think I set them up as admins. I did
create an admin account in the install process and some machines were
installed before I could get to them and I am not sure what was created as an
admin account.

So I need to know how to fix the read only error (error 57 I believe) for
this user and I need to know if I have to have the user log in as admin or
gain admin priviledges to be able to run his app.

Help me if you can.

Directories are called folders.

Read-only means nothing for folders. Only a file can be Read-only.

[[Unlike the Read-only attribute for a file, the Read-only attribute for a
folder is typically ignored by Windows, Windows components and accessories,
and other programs.]]

My guess is that your Rockwell software needs to be updated to be compatible
with Windows XP.
