so i built a computer finally haha

computer specs

Amd Athlon(tm) 64x2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ 2.20 GHz
2 gig kingston hyperx dual core
64 bit windows vista
asus M2A-VM Motherboard with inteegreated graphics.
Nvidia geforce 6200 vid card
80 gig hard drive currently formated with windows vista 64 bit
500 gig hard drive


now my question to u is there a link to a page that can walk me thru running
a dual hard drive setup on my compueter. my pc guy works alot and i have
never dont anything with dual hard drives. and im trying to have this set up
for it.

pc works fine right now minues driver problem for vid card. but i need to
know what i need to do to set it up for dual hard drives.

if u could help it would be much appreciated. ty for ur time

I don't think setting up and running Vista64 is the wisest choice for you

The drives are seriail ata. they have there own seirial ata cables connected
to the motherboard i read something else ealeir this evening about raid but i
dont know to much about it so i dont know what u mean.

No, not true. Both drives, if IDE, can be set on the same cable with the
same jumper position (Cable Select) OR be configured with jumpers as master
and slave. This option has been around for years. As for setting up a m/b
controller based RAID system in Vista64 with an 80Gig and 500Gig SATA drives
as the primary array in RAID1, please feel free to give him your all caps
advice.

Until he replied back with his desired configuration, my advice gives him a
place to start.
The cable select option is available, but not necessarily on every board.
If he doesn't have a basic understanding of how things work, he needs
specific advice, and in my experience not always several different options
to confuse a beginner.
If I had listed all the possiblilties, I'd still be typing my initial reply.
I sure wish I knew everything!

i know how to use the ide drives for instance with two cd-rom drives, i have
that and was perfectly capable of setting the master and slave and getting
them to work lol learned that along time ago. but all the computers ive had
and fixed of mine in the past where old timers. thats why i went outa n
bought all new everything. the sata drives are an whole new thing to me i
appreiciate ur patience agustas.

I don't really understand your question. What does "set it up for dual
hard drives" mean? You don't have to do anything special.

Having two hard drives is like having a filing cabinet with two
drawers. All you have to do is decide what you want to put in each of
them, and the choice is pretty much up to you.

If your question is that you don't know how to decide what to put on
each drive, then I need to ask you a question: why did you get two
hard drives?

When setting up a RAID array, it's standard practice to use two identical
sized drives. The brand and cache size don't have to be the same, but most
users when setting up RAID use completely identical drives. The WD Raptor
line is a common choice due to it's 10,000 RPM spindle speed. But you'll get
close to the same performance with any two similarly sized large cache
7200rpm SATA drives. If you stick an 80 Gig SATA drive and 500 Gig SATA
drive and configure them as a RAID0 volume, you'll have 160Gig total space,
not 580Gig as I sense you are expecting. RAID0 has zero fault tolerance. One
drive failure and all data on both drives is gone. I use RAID0 with twin
74Gig Raptors on my gaming rig, but it's backed up daily using Acronis True
Image and just the OS, Office 2007, Photoshop and games are on the RAID
volume. Saved files, photos, and other assorted critical work is stored
locally on a third 500Gig SATA drive, and daily backep up on a 1Tb NAS SATA
device runnning RAID1 as well as to a third failsafe 750Gig USB/SATA backup
drive that's hooked to my computer.
Since you already have your Vista system running in a non-RAID config,
redoing it in a RAID setup will require a complete reinstall from scratch
and I would strongly suggest you pick up a similar 500Gig SATA drive to do
this. You don't sound like an experienced user. This is a fairly complex
setup that has a learning curve and previous experience and knowledge is an
asset.

both drives as an 80 gig. i couldnt figure that out before y before cause i
know the ones a 500. so that makes total sens to me there. i know i can get
my hands on another 500 gig. i like u, u seem to know what the hell ur
talking about. everything ur saying makes sense so far with what im seeing it
do on my end. but let me ask u this if both drives are being seen by the bios
and the the boot menu howcome i only seeing one c: drive and not both a c:
and a d: ? is one showding the other or is it because i have no jumper pin
setup in either. i was under the impression u didnt have to jumper them
because there were on seperate sata data cables.

In a RAID0 setup, the OS sees and treats the array as a single partition.
This is normal.

i believe that is the way my pc guy mentioned puting windows on the 80 gig
and everything else on the 500 programs games files etc.

im wonder tho wich is best for the application u know. i would like the best
performance for gaming i can possibly get.
