How certain are you that the machine is Malware free ?

What you'll need to determine is what ActiveX components are
installed on your machine. You can either do this via IE Tools
menu or with Windows Explorer.

The ActiveX components are stored in the System folder:
\Windows\Downloaded Program Files

Normally, Explorer's View won't display this content so you
need to change the View options to include:
1.) Show Hidden Files & Folders ( Checked )
2.) Hide Extensions for Known File Types ( Unchecked )
3.) Hide Protected Operating System Files ( Unchecked )
To change View - Open Explorer, Click Tools, Folder Options
View (TAB) = locate the options listed above.

You should now be able to view the ActiveX components that
are loaded on your PC. Right Click each, take Properties. On
the details box you'll see "Codebase:" this should indicate the
source or company associated with the ActiveX.

I'm not sure of anything at this point, but I don't think I have Malware.
This first appeared yesterday when I downloaded and installed a new version
of Norton anti-virus 2007, interestingly enough. I had some trouble removing
the old version of Norton, and at one point, had to click on the 'yellow'
toolbar near the top of the browser page that allowed activex controls, or
some such. I wonder if that did it. Norton is of no help. I did get their
new version installed and I scanned my computer and it removed a few items.
I also have Spybot and I ran it and removed one or two things.

Thanks for the infor, but I'm not sure of anything at this point. These msgs
started yesterday when I tried to remove the old and install a new version of
Norton anti-virus, which I downloaded. I had some trouble uninstalling, and
remember having to click on a yellow toolbar near the top of the browser
window at one point that would allow activex controls. I wonder if that did
it? I had to uninstall several times and eventually had to download and run
their own uninstaller. But, it eventually seemed to work and I got the new
version installed and I scanned my computer and found a few things which I
removed. I've also ran Spybot Search & Destroy, but it made no difference.
The popups just keep on coming.

Norton 2007 explains it. No single program is adequate to detect
and remove all the various infectors. Along with SpyBot you need
additional help with AdAware and Microsoft's Windows Defender.
I'd suggest you use a few "Online" tools to double-check the PC
for "Baddies".

Norton software is a tangled up mess of Processes and enough
Registry Keys to comprise it's own Operating System.

Perhaps it's not our (responders) place to poke Symantec in the eye
but SLOWLY people are realizing how much trouble and expense
Symantec software truly is. There are much better offerings - some
are much cheaper or even Free. One of the problems with choosing
software products is user's reluctance to give up on long-term apps
and try something different.
