Rugged Device and the Compact Framework

Hey all,

I need some advice. I have been given the task of writing
a database application for a mobile handheld PC. The unit
must have a QWERTY keyboard and support the .NET
framework. The unit described above failed this test.
The OS on the Fex21 is Handheld PC 2000.

I assumed that I could write an application in Visual
Studio .NET 2003 and deploy it to the Windows CE device,
and everything would work fine. Now I read that the
device must have Pocket PC 2000 or 2002 ( or CE.NET ) in
order to work properly.

My question is: Is there any (1) Half-VGA, (2) QWERTY
keyboard, (3) Pocket PC 2000/2002/CE.NET devices currently
on sale? Or will I have to go back to eMbedded Visual
Basic? Was my investment in VS.NET 2003 a waste of money?

Regards

Ross...

Check with the OEM to see if they offer, or plan to offer, CE 4.x for the
device.

Well, it's certainly *not* a handheld device, but we have a Windows
CE.NET-based device which is rugged, runs .NET Compact Framework
applications, has a full QWERTY keyboard, and is based on the Intel PXA255
(ARMV4) processor. You can check it out at www.lanpoint.com. It's the
LANpoint CE.NET.

Oh, and it's 1/2 VGA...

Matteo,

Thanks. That sure does look interesting. Is there a good
after sales service on these units?

Yes, that's a bit bigger than what you're trying to use now (not as big as
our device, of course), but it seems like it would probably work.

Isn't that a 'made in Taiwan' device? I'm always a little suspicious that
the guys who really know how the thing works aren't available for support...

Regarding the production place of the psion netbook pro I am quoting
some pieces of information right from another psion newsgroup:
_______________________________________________________________________________

"Welsh electronics manufacturer Axiom has won a £6.4m contract to
manufacture the latest Psion Teklogix computer, the Netbook Pro."

There is even a photo of one, held by some MP by the name of Hain,
talking
to Psion's MD Ras Jezieriski.

The plastic housing etc is moulded in Scotland - hence the report in
Plastics and Rubber weekly for 28/11/03.

Ah, yes, I seem to remember something about that now. Should be reasonably
good, then, especially for European installs.
