RPC service unavailable

I have 2 NICs on my xp prof sp2, one for Internet
connection and one for lan (Marvel Gigabit). I use ICS on
the Internet NIC giving access to my home lan. Recently i
disabled the ICS and when trying to set it back i got
a "RPC server unavailable". The RPC service is started.
However, if i choose to share the lan connection for the
Internet NIC (reversed LAN -> NET, not NET -> LAN) it
works!
The only solution was to restore to a previos date but if
I disable the ICS again, the error comes back.
And one more strange thing...when changing the IP on the
LAN NIC windows ask for a restart! It's not a normal
behaviour for win xp...
My guess is that SP2 has something to do with it, but I'll
let more experienced users to judge that.

Yes - been there Arthur - I get the same error under XPP SP2 - I've posted
here and elsewhere and trawled the net - only advice I got was to
repair/reload XPP - so I am gearing up for that. I think you're right - it's
related to SP2.

I have the same problem. I have SP2 installed and I can not enable ICS since
disabling it some time ago. I have not gotten any further to finding a
workable solution to this problem. Re-installing the OS is not a workable
solution for me.

Just so someone may benefit from my 3 hours of work:

I just had this problem too and searched internet, WinXP help, etc.
Tried all the other stuff: properties on the connections, add/remove
all kinds of stuff, to no avail.

I recently had made some changes to my dialup software and probably
touched some other settings unawares and suddenly the ability to share
my internet connection on my LAN went bye-bye. When I try to reactivate
it, I get a warning that ICS will change my LAN address to 192.168.0.1
and if I say yes to that, it then gives me the "Error 1722: The RPC
server is unavailable" and won't share the internet connection.

BTW: I have WinXP Pro, one dialup connection for internet, one LAN
connection with IP in the 192.168 range static, windows firewall active
on the dialup but not the LAN. ICS was active until problem started.

Here's how I fixed it after the 3 hours of wheel-spinning:

Went into windows firewall settings and restored the windows default
(can't remember exactly where the button is, but its there somewhere).
Rebooted, then tried to activate ICS on the dialup connection. Hey, it
let me do it! Only now it has my LAN IP set to 192.168.0.1. So, then
change my LAN IP back to what it should be, disable the windows
firewall on the LAN connection, and everything is back to normal.
