Routine for problems

I am always being asked to rid computers of viruses ads and spyware.
Sometimes it works well and other times I run into problems. Is there a
general rule of thumb to follow. Ie does one turn off sytem restore, delete
temp files, update software etc. Can anybody give me a guideline please.
