"Upstairs" is the main computer, an hp pavilion a650y
using Windows XP Home Edition using Comcast Cable modem
through a Linksys Router (WRT54G 2.4 GHz),
and "downstairs" is my older Gateway computer originally
on Windows ME but now upgraded to Windows XP Home Edition
using with a Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter that accesses
the "upstairs" Linksys Router. A couple days ago, I had
an Norton 2004 Antivirus problem, and the tech suggested
I shut down the "downstair's" ability to access the web
(internet). Although I told him that process was beyond
my technical ability, since I used a router and a cable
modem and a PowerPanel Plus battery. He persisted. In
my figuring how to shut down, I (1) shut off PowerPanel
Plus, which shut the whole system down. Then to be sure,
I punched that little button in back of the "upstairs"
router, which I understand to be the button that resets
the router. After those two events, the "upstairs,"
after doing a System Restoration, worked ok. BUT,
the "downstairs" computer hadn't the ability to do a
System Restoration, becuase, chasing down a virus, I had
shut off System Restore. Again, the story of my life: A
day late, and a penny short. I couldn't do a System
Restoration (couldn't "rollback" my 'downstairs'
computer). So, in my attempt to get the "upstairs" and
the "downstairs" computers to see each other on the
network, I tried various operation on the "downstairs"
computer. One attempt was to create a WORKGROUP or a
NETWORK PLACE. Now, I have two WORKGROUPS or MY NETWORK
PLACES. I'm not sure. If I go to START/MY NETWORK
PLACES, I find four folders and one drive that's setup
to "share" on the "upstairs" computer. In MY NETWORK
PLACES, if I click VIEW WORKGROUP, I get two computers,
i.e. "upstairs," and, "downstairs. If I double
click "upstairs," a popup request CONNECT TO DOWNSTAIRS,
USER NAME: DOWNSTAIRS/GUEST, and PASSWORD are
requested. First, I've never set up a PASSWORD in
DOWNSTAIRS/GUEST. So I can't access the "upstairs"
WORKGROUPS or computer. So I click "cancel" and double
click the "downstairs" WORKGROUP and access PRINTERS AND
FAX, and, SCHEDULED TASKS. (A quick note: if I
go "downstairs" the problem is reversed, i.e. a PASSWORD
is requested for the "upstairs" computer to be accessed
in UPSTAIRS/GUEST. There's a problem here between these
two computers or WORKGROUPS. If at this point, or any
point, I click NEWWORK CONNECTIONS, I receive the LAN OR
HIGH-SPEED INTERNET: local area connection 2 [that's a
problem. Why #2 now? In my attempts to fix the problem
myself, I created, or thought I was fixing, a NETWORK
CONNECTION, and in effect I duplicated it.
Where's "local area connection 1"?]. In NETWORK
CONNECTIONS, there's the Internet Gateway; above that, A
DIAL-UP CONNECTION: America Online [That's indicated
as "dial-up" but if I access AOL, it's listed as cable or
BROADBAND]; finally there's BROADBAND, listed
as "broadband" connection.
Point is since resetting my router or whatever PowerPanel
Plus did, when I click MY COMPUTER or NETWORK PLACES,
nothing is the same any longer, and, particularly, I
can't get my two computers to communicate on-line or
otherwise. I've been at this days now, and in my
frustration, I figure, wipe the slate clean, and
reinstall both computers: i.e. "upstairs" reset,
and, "downstairs" reset, and hopefully re-write all the
configuration for two computers in one house to
communicate and share folders and/or drives. To end, the
info you requested is above in the first couple of lines.
Please help.
P.S. If possible, please e-mail me at
(e-mail address removed). In advance, thank you for your
time and help.
