Rootkit Detection in Win98SE?

Q: What are the Windows versions supported by current version of
AntiHook?
A: At this point of time we provide full support for Windows 2000,
Windows XP, Windows 2003 and related SPs.

RootKit Hook Analyzer Check for kernel rootkit hooks on your system.
version 1.01 WinXP/2003/2000 download

Neither of the above are suitable for use on Win98.

Note: The F-Secure BlackLight Beta only works on 32-bit Windows 2000,
Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server. The current F-Secure BlackLight
beta does not work on Windows NT, 95, 98, ME, or 64-bit Windows.
Maybe the english version of IceSword.

No need to install the english translation.

No description, in English, that says exactly what it does or what its
purpose is. A companion program, Wolff, actually seems to install a
root kit according to my reading of the documentation.

Once again no programs that work in Win98.

It seems that root kits are easier to write for the NT style OS and
are not much of a problem in 98 etc. This could be because 98 is
getting scarcer on the ground and malicious programs would be largely
ineffectual.

My understanding is that most of the attention is now on kernel based
rootkits, which are specific to NT/Win2k/XP machines, the detectors are
similarly geared against them.

It's not that Win 98 is harder to fool or write rootkits for. Just
fundamentally different. And it's become scarcer yes and less targetted.

In fact by and large NT style machines have better security features (or
rather can be tweaked to be so).

Just a note: I had some pretty ugly experience with this product on my
XP system. Autostarts as a trial (until you register, but no charge).
Hung my box completely until I ended it and several other processes.
Upon uninstallation (which required that I end still more running
processes), had BSOD (IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL...), finally managed to get
system shut down, restored to earlier date.

And, for those who may suggest so, no - I haven't had ANY other issues on
my system to this point.

Your experiences may vary...

It's OK on my XP pro, Bubba.

Good deal. Like I suggested, your experience may vary. I'm glad you
didn't have to deal with the same agony which befell me.
