On a 2000 Server, when a user access's a file in a Shared folder via a
drive mapping the file is labeled as Read Only. and they cannot modify
it. If they save as a different file name it gives a warning that the
Folder is Read Only.
If the go thru Explorer to Domain, Server, Share, then open all is great.

Why would the drive mapping cause it to be Read Only?

Hmmmm....;)

Check and make sure the share permissions are set to full access, best
practices are to restrict with file and folder permissions not through share
permissions.
