See if this applies:

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install security
update MS06-015:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

- -A u t o m a t e - - -

Download Q918165_HP_Fix.reg below and save to Desktop. Right-click the file
and then choose Merge. Restart Windows for the changes to take effect.

That's happening after applying the latest security updates by MS?
If true, that's most likely one of the KB908531 you may have ran into:

<quote>
Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install security
update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165
Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-015

Vulnerability in Windows Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution (908531)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx

For those who have Hewlett Packard's Share to Web Software, there are two
registry patches to choose from (run either one or the other) not both:

Ottmar Freudenberger has made a patch available at:-
http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads/KB908531_Share-To-Web.zip
(Note this is a Zip file and will need to be extracted. It contains a REG file
which needs to be imported into the registry)
or
Kelly has made a patch available at:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line #383 - this is a vbs file and instructions on how to use such files are at
the top of the page.
</quote>

The REG file Ramesh linked to, may not be enough.

Freudi

Hi Freudi,

I noticed an additional line in your REG file

- - -
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell
Extensions\Approved]
"{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9}"=-
- - -

As this is not mentioned in KB918165, I'm wondering if the above line is
mandatory? AFAIK, the above key contains the list of approved shell
extensions, and that comes into play only if the "
EnforceShellExtensionSecurity" Policy is enabled. Or perhaps am I missing
something?

Yes, see also
I've received serval reports per mail and in other ways, that the
registry hacking mentioned in KB918165 is *not* enough. After they
applyied "my" fix, their machines have been fine.

Astonishing anyway, that Kelly's VBS file deletes the value
mentioned above too.

Thanks, Freudi. Again that is the case in corporate systems where the
EnforceShellExtensionSecurity Policy is enabled. If the Policy is not
enabled the shell does not have to enumerate the "Approved" sub-keys at all.

That's true since verclsid.exe too? I'ld doubt that "a little bit".
