Reverting to Windows 98

I have an old computer, a 333, that I purchased @1997.
It came with windows 95 installed. I upgraded to Windows
98 and was happy with that version of windows. I later
upgraded to XP and subsequently lost many of my
peripherals....I know.....but.
I now have other computers and all are Windows XP. I
have a friend that I would like to give the old
computer. Problem is, I want to revert to Windows 98.
XP will not let me. I have a Windows 98 Startup
diskette, and a Windows 98 CD. When I boot and come up
with the Startup diskette, it runs for a while and then
locks up. I have observed that it is examining the hard
drive and see's the windows files that are already there
and is apparently trying to use them instead of loading
new files for Windows 98 from the CD.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

If using FAT32, you will need to first format, then run setup.

If using NTFS, you will need to run fdisk and delete the non-dos partition,
then create a primary FAT32 partition. Reboot, then format and proceed with
setup.

In either case, setup will not proceed with a newer OS already installed.
You will need to start with a formatted disk.

Since you have upgraded to XP then you will
probably have an 'uninstall Windows' in the Add/Remove Programs, which
will restore 98.

See if that startup Win98 Floppy has FDISK on it. If it
does, try to remove the partition, then do a format on
the C: drive with the /s partition so you can boot to it.

Also make sure your Win98 CD is the full version, then
boot to the CD.

XP will not let me. I have a Windows 98 Startup
diskette, and a Windows 98 CD.

Boot that Win98 startup floppy, taking 'minimal boot'. Run
FDISK
say Y to 'Large Disk Support?'
Use that to Delete the XP partition from hard disk - a non-DOS partition
if NTFS - then make a new DOS primary one instead.

Reboot, with CD support, noting the letter assigned for the CD, probably
E:
FORMAT C:
E:
(or other letter to switch to the CD drive and the Win98 CD in it)
SETUP
