When you are in a Word document and you want to quickly return to the Table
of Contents, is there a keystroke for this?

One way is to press CTRL+HOME, which moves the cursor to the
beginning of the document. Of course, this usually means that you
may have to go forward a few pages (depending on document
layout). This can be accomplished by pressing CTRL+PgDn.

For Word 2002 and later there is an easier method, namely, the
"Go to TOC" toolbar button that moves the cursor directly to the
TOC. You can add it to any toolbar via Tools>Customize. Just
click the All Commands category, locate the command and drag it
to the desired toolbar.

If you just came from the TOC via a hyperlink Alt - Left-Arrow or Shift-F5
may do what you want.
