I had Windows xp Professional on my computer and was on it one day. The next
day I couldn't log on. Had a phrase saying I needed the cd-rom disk and hit
"r" for repair. However I got a disk but it was Windows xp Home and installed
it instaed of repairing. Will I be able to retrieve my files that were on the
c: after insatalling Windows xp Home. I am able to see my files that were
saved on the D:. I need help

What exactly happen, did you make a dual boot or you done clean install for
XP Home.
Now when you log on what you can see, do you go direct to XP Home without
any Selective procedure between XP Pro and XP Home?.
Try to take the ownership for the files on Drive D or the whole drive.
To take the ownership read this;

All I can give now is a guess as you didn't provide more Information about
your issue.

I installed Windows xp home thinking it was Windows xp Professional.All I
have now when I log on is just the Windows xp Home. I have to go thru the
procedure of registration and activation again. THis is fine but, when all is
done can I retrieve my files or are they gone for good?
