I saved a word document on the C drive and when I tried to open it from the
file dropdown I got a Problem with Shortcut message. The message said that
the shortcut has been change or moved so this shortcut will no longer work
properly. I then give me a file with the "nearest match based on size, date
and type. It then asks if I want to fix the shortcut to point to the
"nearest match" target or delete it. This is information for my dissertation
and I really need to retreive it. Can anyone offer suggestions on how I can
get this file. Incidentally, I received this message on my laptop and my
desktop.

Safe to say your dissertation is not in computer science? ;-)

You should have nothing to worry about. A shortcut to a file is merely a
pointer to the file - not the actual file itself. Just like a sign that
says "this way to the beach" merely points to the beach and is not the
same as the beach itself.

Find the actual word document and open that. And BTW, anything as
important as your dissertation should be regularly backed up somewhere else.

Shortcuts go awry all the time, just like in real life. Good luck with
your defense.
