retrieving info from previous version

I have updated my Outlook from 2000 to 2003. In the information accompanying
the CD-ROM from which I installed the new version it seemed to suggest that
all my data will work with the new version. When I opened the Outlook,
however, it did not even recognise the accounts previously used on the
computer. What is more disastrous, its inbox is empty and so is its address
book. Have I really lost all the info (it goes back at least 4 years) or is
there some way of getting this back?

Upgrading Outlook will not delete any data. From this point it is hard to
say why your account settings didn't transfer properly. You can reconfigure
the account via Tools-> Account settings. To get your data back in Outlook,
all you have to do is reconnecting your pst-file via File-> Open-> Outlook
Data File...

I have managed to get the accounts back, thanks. But I am not sure I
understand what it is I have to do to get my inbox, sent mails and address
book back. When I open the File -> Open -> Outlook Data File... and Look in:
Outlook there are no Personal Folders Files (is this the pst-file you
mentioned?). It is possible - but I am not sure and don't know how I would
check - that my previous version was Outlook Express rather than 'just'
Outlook. Would that change the situation?

I have now actually managed to retrieve the address book by using File ->
Import a and Export... But I still cannot find the 1000+ emails from my
previous inbox. So what you are saying is that I need to open Outlook Express
and use the Export feature from there(?) The trouble is that I can't find
Outlook Express anywhere - is it possible that the installation of Outlook
2003 deleted it? And is it indeed possible to open Outlook Express while
Outlook 2003 is up and running?

OK, so I found Outlook Express, but it only had two messages in the inbox
(that I exported) and nothing in the other folders. As I said, I had managed
to import the address book by using the File -> Import and Export... command
in Outlook, but this had not imported any messages. I am pretty sure that
Outlook Express was full of them when I was closing it yesterday. Any idea
where they might be hiding now?

No, NO, NO! Never import when transferring data from one Outlook version to
another. Besides, you said you upgraded from Outlook 2000 to 2003. Why do
you think Outlook Express has anything to do with this?

With Outlook closed, start the Mail applet in Control panel and use the Data
Files button to browse to the PST that Outlook 2000 was using. Select it,
and click OK. That will add it to your mail profile so that Outlook can see
it. Now use the E-mail Accounts button (click E-mail Accounts>View or
change existing e-mail accounts>Next. In the "Deliver new e-mail to the
following location" drop-down at the bottom, choose the old PST you added.
FiInish the wizard, then start Outlook.
