I was able to create a windows theme and save it without a problem but can't
figure out how to save my desktop icon placment. Where is that stored? I'd
like to back it up. I back up the actual desktop, but want to also backup
the icon placement if possible.
Thanks!

I believe you will need third party software. This is what I use.

You can Google "save Icon Position" and see what else is available.

And there's a free version from Microsoft at this site:
http://users.rcn.com/taylotr/icon_restore.html

Icon Restore installs LAYOUT.DLL (along with the required registry entries)
from Microsoft. Two new options are added to the pop up menu that opens when
any Windows system icon (ex. My Computer) is right clicked. These options
are "Save Desktop Icon Layout" and "Restore Desktop Icon Layout".

Dear Gord,
I have installed a comparable utility from Kelly's site, the problem with
this type of backup and restore is that it writes the layout to the registry,
so, if I do a restore of my system, my current icon layout won't be there.
That's what I'm trying to achieve. I've contacted a couple of developers who
make approximating tools to see if they can be made to do what I need which
is write dsomething to a file that can be saved, backed up and restored, in
spite of a system restore.
Thanks so much for your suggestions!

Sue, why don't you look into getting a drive imaging program such as Acronis
True Image. Save compressed images of the drive on an external USB drive.
That way in case of a problem just restore the complete image. It also does
file backups and for images individual files can be restored. Couple this
with the edit from Kelly's site to handle those times when something causes
the icon layout to change, and you're all set.

So, export the key and save that export with other files you restore to your computer.

Dear Keith,
Thank you for your kind reply. I actually found a utility to do just what I
am looking for. It is called IconSort and the developer is out of Argentina.
There is also a tool by a German developer call DIManager. I am waiting to
hear back to confirm that he too enables the saving of the icon positions to
a file.
