retain sum of cells after clearing addends

how do I retain the sum of two or more cells after clearing them of data--so that new data may be inserted and the data in the "sum" cell will continue to accumulate until cleared. Exa. A1= the sum of B1 and C1. B1 and C1 may be cleared after inserting data to be added together, A1 maintains the sum. New data in B1 and C1 will be added to the existing sum in A1 for a new sum of the 3 cells ---B1+C1+A1 = new total in A1.

This is how it works unless you clear A1. So don't clear A1.

Hi jthomas!

What you can do is:

Select A1:C1
Copy
Select (say) A2:C2
Edit > Paste Special > Values > OK

This retains formulas in A1:C1 and copies the current values to the
new range.

Or:

Select A1:C1
Copy
Select (say) A3:C3
Paste

This puts a copy of the formulas in A1:C1 in the new range and keeps
the formulas in A1:C1
