Retail Upgrade

I think I have settled on buying the retail upgrade for home premium (if one
exists).

I am wondering if the upgrade process will be similar to from going to
win98-XP. That is, instead of having to install the whole win98 first, you
just enter your valid 98 key and then install the XP.

Will this Vista upgrade be the same method or will I have to install XP
first?

This has been beaten to death here.

If you don't care to scan back a few days - you need to have WinXP
"validated" on your hard drive in order to use an upgrade install.

You'll have to install and activate Windows XP prior to using the
Windows Vista upgrade DVD to upgrade.

Thanks, sorry to have repeated a question.

Forgot to ask, sorry, if I need to, is it possible to untie the XP from that
Vista in the future? Say if I wanted to move the Vista to another PC and
have original XP back on laptop can I do that or are they tied forever?

Yes to both questions, as long as you have it on only one machine at a time
and have a valid upgrade path OS on whatever machine you install it on.

You will need XP or Win2k on the new machine in order to reuse the Vista
upgrade edition on it while leaving your present XP functional on its
present machine.

If you are considering moving Vista to another machine in the future, buy a
full edition of Vista now.

I simply cannot justify the high price of the full version. I might as well
go out and buy a new PC as that will probably be cheaper than full retail.

cost me $399 because I,m using the Ultimate now and will stay with it.

Then image your Vista installation as soon as it is set up the way you want
and archive the image.
