Restoring replaced document

Instead of creating a new name for a document, I clicked "yes" to replace an
existing document. Can I restore the previous document? It is not in the
recycle bin nor was I able to restore it through the "versions" button
because no previous versions were shown.

And if you did not have the "Always create backup copy" box checked under
Tools>Options>Save, there is no way of retrieving it short of spending
hundreds or thousands of dollars with someone who specialises in the
recovery of data from hard disks.
