Restoring Registry

To make a long story short, I was editing my registry to completely remove McAfee software prior to new installation (per McAfee instructions). Prior to starting, I made a Backup of the registry and saved on my desktop (again per McAfee instructions).

Half way through the editing, I quit and decided to restore the back-up registry. When I double click the back-up file, the following message appears:

Cannot import C/Docume~/Owner/desktop/backup.reg. Not all data was successfully written to the Registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes.

I have not shut down the computer. Any chance of fixing my mess?

Use System Restore, that's what it's for.

Thank you for your help. However, I thought system restore would not completely recover/restore registry problems.

In view of the error message about open keys, is an alternate to restart in safe mode and try to install the back-up registry from there.

Sure, you can Run Restore from Safe Mode, in fact when you enter Safe Mode
the system asks you whether you want to run System Restore.

On this subjevt. I suggest you download ERUNT (it is freeware) and use that
to backup your Registry. It is bullet proof whereas System Restore can be a
little flaky.
