If I have a backup set which includes my Windows XP
Private Key/Certificate, but do not want to restore the
ENTIRE backup set to preserve some file changes made
since my last backup, is there a method of restoring just
the Private Key/Certificate files to unlock my current
files which have been modified since my last backup?

If so, what is the method and what is/are the file/files
I would need to restore?

~Thanks!

All of the certificates and private keys live under %appdata%. That's a
directory usually something like this:
c:\Documents and Settings\MyUserName\application data\
The certificates are under here:
Microsoft\SystemCertificates\My\Certificates\
The private keys are under here:
Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\{<whatever_the_user's_sid_is>}\

There's no telling which certs and keys you need, but you shouldn't need
anything that isn't under those directories.

Jennifer,

As it sounds like you have not reinstalled, what is it
that happened to your cert/key that makes you need
to restore these ?
I am just wanting to make sure that you do have this
correctly diagnosed before you follow up by restoring
the portion of the profile Drew has indicated.
(Oh yes, in case you have not noticed, the NTbackup
utility does allow you to selectively restore from within
a backup so you do not need to restore it all. Just let
it catalog it and it then provides you with a checkbox
tree view of what is restorable).
