Restoring original themes and styles

How do I restore the original (default) themes and styles in Word 2007? After
I tried to create a new theme and style set that would conform to APA Style
for manuscripts submitted for publication, all of my themes are now identical.

It's unclear from your question whether you have a problem with:
*built-in* or *custom* document themes (and/or their 3 component sets);
*built-in* or *custom* Quick Style sets;
- or-
any combination thereof

It does not seem likely that problem is with the Normal template, which only
has relevance vis-a-vis the active document theme (and/or its 3 component
sets), the so-called “active†Quick Style set (actually copied
definitions/references to definitions) and the document defaults

My initial assumption is that the problem is only with *custom* document
themes (and/or their 3 component sets) and *custom* Quick Style sets (I. 1st
Approach). If the initial assumption is incorrect, I’ll then address built-in
document themes and built-in Quick Style sets (II. 2nd Approach; you must
have administrative rights to implement this approach). Finally, if neither
of the 1st two approaches works I’ll address an unlikely source of the
problem that you have described, the Normal template (3rd Approach)

All references to file locations assume program files and user-specific
files are stored on C:\

I. 1st Approach

A. Custom Document Themes:
1. Background re custom document themes
You apparently have created custom document themes (and possibly separate,
custom sets of theme colors, theme fonts and theme effects). These are
displayed in the Custom area of the Themes gallery (Theme Colors gallery,
etc. on the Page Layout tab, in the Themes group. It should be noted that
creating a custom document theme (or set of theme colors, theme fonts or
theme effect) with the same name as the built-in defaults does NOT overwrite
the file containing the built-in defaults.

Custom document themes for a user are saved at:
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates\Document Themes\ *.thmx (XP)
-or-
C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\Document
Themes\*.thmx (Vista)

Custom sets of theme colors, custom sets of theme fonts and custom sets of
theme effects for a user are saved in Theme Colors (*.xml), Theme Fonts
(*.xml) and Theme Effects (*.eftx) folders within the Templates\Document
Themes folder cited immediately above

2. Actions re custom document themes
Copy and save in another location (say a folder on the desktop) any custom
document themes, custom sets of theme colors, custom sets of theme fonts,
custom sets of theme effects.

Then delete any files in the \Templates\Document Themes folder, the
\Templates\Document Themes\Theme Colors, \Templates\Document Themes\Theme
Fonts and the \Templates\Document Themes\Theme Effects folders.

B. Custom Quick Style Sets:
1. Background re custom Quick style sets
You apparently have also created custom Quick Style sets. They will be
displayed in the Style Set menu (Home tab, Styles group, Change Styles, point
to Style set). They may or may not have the same name as the built-in,
default Quick Style sets. Each one that has the same name as a built-in,
default Quick style set will replace the built-in, default Quick Style set of
the same name in the Style Set menu. The file containing the build-in,
default Quick Style set will NOT be overwritten.

Each customized Quick Style set is saved in a .dotx file at a different,
user-specific location reserved for Quick Style sets:
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Quick
Styles\*.dotx (XP)
-or-
C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\QuickStyles\*.dotx (Vista)

2. Actions re custom Quick Style Sets:
Copy and save in another location (say a folder on the desktop) any *.dotx
files containing custom Quick Style sets. Then delete any files in the
\QuickStyles folder cited immediately above.

C. Verifying that problem has been solved
Start Word

See if your problem is gone by Live Previewing the choices (hold the pointer
over the choice and note the change in the document, then escape) in the
Themes gallery, the Theme Colors gallery, the Theme Fonts gallery, the Theme
Effects gallery and finally in the Style Set menu

If you’re satisfied, the best approach is to apply the desired document
theme (“Office†is the default) and the desired Quick Style set (“Word 2007â€
is the default) and then set them as the default for future documents (Home
tab, Styles group, Change Styles, Set as Default)

If all is well, you’re done

If not, go to the 2nd approach, which I'll post in a separate reply

II. 2nd Approach:
Warning: You must have administrative rights to implement this approach.

1. Background re document themes, sets of theme colors, theme font and theme
effects:
Built-in, default document themes and set of theme colors, theme fonts and
theme effects
There are built-in, default files for all document themes and for all sets
of theme colors, theme fonts and theme effects with the exception of the
default "Office" document theme, which is hard-coded); the default, built-in
document themes, sets of theme colors, etc. are displayed in the Built-in
area of the Themes gallery (Theme Colors gallery, etc.)

Document theme *.thmx files are stored at C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Document Themes 12\*.thmx (XP or Vista)

The files containing sets of theme colors (*.xml), sets of theme fonts
(*.xml) and sets of theme effects (*.eftx) are stored in child folders of
Document Themes 12

2. Actions re built-in document themes and or sets of theme colors, theme
fonts or theme effects:
Copy these files and save them in another location (for example, a folder on
the desktop).

Delete all the files in \Microsoft Office\Document Themes 12 and the 3 child
folders (Theme Colors, Theme Fonts and Theme Effects)



3. Background re built-in Quick Style sets
There are built-in, default files for all 11 Quick Style sets.

Each customized Quick Style set is saved in a .dotx file at a different,
user-specific location reserved for Quick Style sets:
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Quick
Styles\*.dotx (XP)
-or-
C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\QuickStyles\*.dotx (Vista)

4. Actions re built-in Quick Style set
Copy these files and save them in another location (for example, a folder on
the desktop).

Delete all the files in \Microsoft\Quick Styles

5. Actions re recreating both built-in document themes, sets of theme
colors, sets of theme fonts, sets of theme effects and built-in Quick Style
sets

Run diagnostics as follows:
Office Button, Word Options, Word Options dialog box, Resources, Diagnose,
Continue, Run Diagnostics)
Be patient.
Office will recreate the files in the proper folders

6. If neither of the 1st two approach works, which is highly unlikely, try
the 3rd approach, which I'll post in a separate reply

III. 3rd Approach:
A. Background:
This approach deletes Normal.dotm; Word recreates the default Normal.dotm
the next time you start and exit Word

This approach may cause problems with other customizations (macros, styles,
etc.)

Normal.dotm and user-defined templates are stored by default in:
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name \Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\
(XP)
-or-
C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\ (Vista)

B. Actions:
Rename Normal.dotm as normalold.dotm so that you will still have access to
macro modules, custom styles, etc.


You can then automatically load Normalold.dotm in every session as a global
template
Just copy the template and paste it in either of the following locations:
(C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application
Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP\ (XP)
-or-
C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP\ (Vista):

Changing the appearance of the UI are:
Customizations to the Quick Access Toolbar saved in Normalold.dotm

Trap: Any changes made with respect to the initial display or initial sort
order in the Styles task pane, the Apply Styles task pane, the classic style
gallery and the Quick Styles Gallery in the Home tab, in the Styles group or
from the Mini Toolbar will not be available from Normalold.dotm

Available from a load Normalold.dotm are:
Custom building blocks in the appropriate galleries and the Building Blocks
Organizer, if you have saved them to Normalold.dotm rather than to the
default Building Blocks.dotx
User-defined macros and customized keyboard shortcuts saved to Normalold.dotm
Trap: You cannot edit macros in any loaded global template other than the
Normal template; you must open the template separately to edit macros

Formatted AutoCorrect entries and AutoCorrect entries containing graphics
will not be available

Far less usefully, customized built-in styles and Quick Styles and
user-defined styles and Quick Styles– since they are available for copying
into the document only using the Organizer and of course do not appear in
Styles task pane, Apply Styles task pane, classic style gallery or Quick
Styles gallery on the Home tab, in the Styles group

Alternatively, you can do the following:
The Organizer (press ALT+T simultaneously, release and press I (the letter
i) to display the Templates and Add-ins dialog box) can be used to copy macro
modules and styles from normalold.dotm to the new normal.dotm if you desire;
keyboard shortcuts would have to be recreated; Quick Access Toolbar settings
saved there rather than in the default Word.qat cannot be copied and would
have to be recreated; building blocks saved there rather than in the default
Building Blocks.dotx would have to be changed one at a time in the Building
Blocks Organizer (Edit Properties); formatted AutoCorrect entries and entries
containing graphics, if any, will need to be recreated

Dear Aeneas,

Thank you so much for your very helpful and knowledgable advice.

I followed your suggestions in the first two posts, which restored the
styles to the originals, including the "normal" style.

However, when I go to the "page layout" tab, no themes are available, and
the themes area of the ribbon is grayed out. Therefore, I assume that the
diagnostics did not restore the themes, and I may need to reinstall office.
Is that correct?

Glad to be of help so far...

Do not reinstall Word.

Someone may have blocked the switching of document themes and sets of theme
colors,, theme fonts and theme effects, which causes the entire Themes group
to be grayed out.

To clear the blocking:
On the Home tab, in the Styles group, click the Styles Dialog Box Launcher
(arrow to the right of "Styles" at the bottom of the Styles group) to display
the Styles task pane (or press CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+S)
Click Manage Styles (3rd command button at bottom of Styles task pane) to
display the Manage Styles dialog box
Click the Restrict tab
Clear the Block Scheme or Theme switching check box
(If the Block Quick Style Set switching check box is checked, you'll want to
clear this as well)
Click the New documents based on this template radio button to save the
change to the Normal template)
Click OK

Hmmm, the "Block Theme or Scheme Switching" was not selected, so nothing to
clear. Ditto for "Block Quick Style Set"

Hold everything . . . Problem seems to be solved, when opening a new, blank
document, rather than the one I had been working on.
