Norton backed up my e-mails in a folder winmail.fol. I can not find a way to
transfer this back to Winmail, nor can I find any application that will open
the winmail.fol file. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

That would be a question for the good folks at Symantec; Norton created this
file, it should be capable of opening it.

Thanks Hal. Maybe I should have spent 6 hours trying to wring it out of them
instead of the 5 hours I actually spent - trying to get the good folks at
Symantec to understand the problem. Apart from that your contribution, though
appreciated, was frankly ....... well, useless

So, unfortunately, are most Symantec products which I refuse to use for that
very reason It is, however, not really a mail problem and a Symantec forum
would be a much better place to raise the issue, hence the not-so-useful
suggestion.

If you have a problem with a third party tool, then their site is the place
to seek support and not an MS specific group, which supports the use of MS
products
After all if you have a Ford, then GM is not the place to ask if you have
problems with it

Thank you "DL". Now why didn't I think of that?
I take it that if you were lost in your Ford, you wouldn't think of asking a
GM driver the way? I can assure you that I really have been down all obvious
lines of inquiry, particularly including Norton - so far without success. I
thought that asking the wider MS community, who must have hundreds of
thousands among them who have used Norton's back-up facility, might just
reveal the answer.

tonybre,

Norton "what"? Backed up your mail.

Please give some detail about the application that you are using.

As far as I know, winmail.fol files are not backups of Windows Mail.
If you know which program created those backup files, contact
their support techs or user forums.

Using a file manager (Windows Explorer) to add or delete
messages is not advisable because it will corrupt the database.
Use the Import/Export tools under the File menu.
