Restoring after a hard drive replacement

I have read through the restore from a system image backup procedure. My
question is, rather than having to create DVDs to save the 200 GB on my
complete Pc backup, I have save it to an NTFS external hard drive. Can I
restore from that rather than from the DVDs? Is the process the same as
restoring from DVDs?

Yes
As long as you can see the drive when you boot into your recovery environment.
So test it out.
