I have turned on monitoring of my C volume by xp mce. I then installed
an updated version of the media player. If I wanted to restore to the old
player what would I do?

Uninstall the newer version through Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs.

So it sounds like restore is really useless. I could do that with it
turned off.

Leave System Restore turned on. It's there for when something goes wrong and
you're looking to take your computer back to the state it was in before the
problem started. That's not the case in the situation you describe. You don't
mention that there were any problems installing or uninstalling WMP11 so there's
no need to bring System Restore into the equation. It's a matter of using the
correct tool for the job.

System restore is for fixing system configuration and registry problems, not for the restoration of
programs or personal files.
In the case of updated versions of Windows programs, uninstalling the update returns the earlier
version.
Hope that helps you understand what tools are used for what problems.
