The only way for Windows 2000 would have been to use an image file
of the system partition and restore by using it. System restore is
a feature that appeared first in Windows XP.

Windows 2000 has no System Restore program like that found on Windows Me or
XP. There are third party programs that can do this. One is called GoBack
however it has proven to be very problematic especially for inexperienced
users. Personally I use Acronis TrueImage. True Image has several very good
functions. If you have the disk space you can create a hidden partition and
create a full system image to that hidden partition. You can schedule
Acronis to regularly create incremental backups or differential backups - a
bit like Restore Points that you can roll back to. You can also set it to
just backup files and folders and restore those to the location of your
choice. The programs creates a bootable CD which lets you access your
backups from outside of windows. Very handy if your system won't boot. It
can burn images to CD or DVD or external USB drives as well as across a
network.

Restore from your periodically created backups you setup using whatever
method you decided you could best understand/maintain.
