hi

I have a friend whose sister passed away.

It is aan acer laptop 1522LMI, he wants to clean it off back to its original
state.

It has windows xp professional version 2002. I haven't looked at the restore
points yet.
As of now he does not have any disc for it, still checking.

What is the easiest way to get it back to the orignal state on start up?

Thanks

Bruce

There is no Windows 2002, only Windows 2000.
There is no System Restore in Windows 2000.
This newsgroup focuses on Windows XP. Why not post your question in
windows2000.general. The experts there will probably tell you that you must
format the disk and reload Windows 2000 from the CD.

Format & do a clean install of Windows. Please note that neither System
Restore nor a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) is what's called for
here.

After the clean install, you'll have the equivalent of a "new computer" so
take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting
the machine to the internet or a network and before using a USB key that
isn't brand-new or hasn't been freshly formatted:

The User's Guide may be found here:

The file you need to download:

Aspire 1360_Aspire 1520 Eng.pdf

Recovery iinstructions are found on pp. 60-61.

Bruce:
I'm not sure whether that laptop came with a recovery/restore CD or there's
a recovery/restore partition on the laptop's HDD that you and/or the owner
can use to return the system to its factory state. Hopefully the owner has
the machine's user manual that would provide this info. If not, the easiest
thing would be to get in touch with Acer about this.

Hi

Sorry it is windows xp professional the 2002 after that I think, hae to
start it back up and re-check, but it is xp prof.
The key is on the bottom. I will have to call him to see if he can find a
disc for it.
I did email acer to make sure on how to do it.

I will check pages 61-2 in the manual.

I wanted to make sure on a few things before I started and found out I was
in the middle of something
I couldn't go back from.

Why are you completely overlooking the possibility of doing a
recovery?

It is true that if you right-click My Computer and select Properties,
all versions of XP will show "Version 2002" (and if you run winver, it
will say Version 5.1). Bottom line: all you need to do is say you are
running XP Pro. :-) By sticking 2002 at the end of your sentence, you
apparently confused Pegasus, who probably didn't see the "xp" and
thought you said you were running "Windows 2002," which doesn't exist.

Do you have something to contribute here?

Obviously you don't. And now it's there for all posterity to see. I
don't know the response needed either but at least I can admit it by
warning this is OT.

XP IS windows 2002. Same for Office: Office 2002 is also known as
Office XP. So windows 2002 is a legit name and does in fact exist.

That has been established. But hardly anyone calls it that. Just like
hardly anyone calls it Windows 5.1. For all intents and purposes,
"Windows 2002" doesn't exist. And since that's what Pegasus mistakenly
saw, that's probably why he responded as he did with the statement:
