Restore Points in XP Home edition

I have two PCs - a desktop and a laptop. The laptop
allows me to see Restore Points both in the current month
and I can scroll back to the previous month also; the
desk top will not scroll back into a previous month.
Similarly, the laptop usually has a number of dates
highlighted as Restore Points but the desktop only the
current day.

I am a new user - IT illiterate (almost) can anyone help
in very simple language?

it depends how much disk space you have assigned for restore points.
Go to Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System restore and click
on System Restore Settings on the left hand side.
