Got my machine working how I want it. How do I manually create a restore
point in XP Home, so that I can roll back to this if necessary?

Open "Help and Support" from start menu

Click on "System Restore" (under "Additional Resources")

Click on "Create a Restore Point"

Enter your own description (date is auto added so don't put that)

Click "Create"

Click "Create a Restore Point"
Click Next and follow prompts.

Restore Points created manually or automatically have a limited life.
As more Restore Points are created, older ones are deleted on a first
in first out basis.

you lazy moron! This group is here for those who first help themselves, not

To keep it simple & easy, follow the instructions from -

Once you follow the simple directions, create the shortcut & store it in a
convenient place, it's then only necessary for you to click on that link to
create a new restorepoint any time in the future.
It even tells you the name generated for that point.

that worthless tripe you just told the OP to use. ****, but you're a waste of
good air and bandwidth, the stench your neighbors keep complaining about, and
a waste of energy by your parents for those 5 minutes it took for the rubber to

Before you too excited about using XP's restore, remember at best it works
some of the time and at worst it never works. I believe restore is actually
only supposed to affect system files, but my experience with it says it if
you have downloaded or saved files to the HD after setting a restore point
then use restore, you WILL lost all those also.
I found the best solution is partition the HD and then use an imaging
program such as Nortons Ghost and create images of the OS partition and any
other partitions other than the on that the ghost images are to be stored
on.
It then only takes a few minutes to restore the images and I have NEVER had
that fail.

I suggest you refer to the question asked in the original post, rather than
reply to my response and also try not to make gigantic mountains of
unnecessary work out of molehills.

I'm curious about your comments in the first sentence. Either you have
something seriously wrong with your system, or you don't have a clue what
you're talking about.
I regularly go back & forth between random points for various technical
reasons and have NEVER had a "at worst it never works" situation.

Next point, if you download & save a file, Restore does definitely NOT cause
you to lose that file - fact!

Thanks to all who have provided guidance that addresses my original enquiry.

I have now created a Sys Restore Point, and despite comments by some in this
thread I feel a lot happier. Of course I may be misguided in this, but for
the time being ignorance is bliss.
