See MVP Bert Kinney's System Restore pages:
http://bertk.mvps.org/index.html regarding your System Restore issues.

Some virus/trojan/spyware infestations will block the functioning of
the more popular antivirus programs. Check your computer for possible
malware infestations with one of the following free online scanners:
Kaspersky Online Scanner http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan
WindowSecurity.com TrojanScan http://windowssecurity.com/trojanscan

Good luck

True. Many new viruses can, and will, immediately disable popular
anti=virus apps.

Best bet is NOT to download/install the virus in the first place.

I will try an use one of the scans you have listed. I did go to mcafee but
it nothing happens when I click on the free online scan. I was going to try
and email them or call them but when I clicked on the contact us link I got a
blank page. When I try and un install mcafee from control panel add/remove
programs it will not uninstall and when I click on re download on the mcafee
site nothing happens. the link changes color but my browser stays on the
same page. I have also tried to download AVG but it appears that there is
something in my system that will not let me do anything that has to do with
antivirus or scan sites. I tried to open windows security from control panel
to turn off the firewall but it says that the firewall program cannot be
started due to ICS being disabled. thanks for taking the time to help me
with this.

On a working computer go to http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger and
download Stinger (free). It is small enough to fit onto a 3.5 inch
diskette.

Boot the problem computer into Safe Mode, insert the diskette, and run
Stinger. It will locate and remove most of the currently "popular"
viruses and trojans.

Good luck

But at least it ran, which is a hopeful sign.

Can you boot your computer into "Safe Mode with Networking"?

If so then you should be able to access the McAfee site. Try both the
online scanner and the download; hopefully at least one of them will
work.

Another option would be if you have a CD Burner on your working
computer, or a USB memory stick. Download one of the following:

Ewido Security Suite - http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Webroot SpySweeper trial version - http://www.webroot.com/download

Save the downloaded file to a CD or memory stick and then try
installing it on the problem computer.

Good luck
