Restore Original IDE drivers?

Hi,

A bit of a long story, but basically, I have a Win2K Pro SP4 system where it
appears that something is not right. The system is working, and "Ultra DMA"
is enabled for the IDE hard drive, but using the HDTach program
(http://www.simplisoftware.com/Public/index.php?request=HdTach) it appears
that it is not performing correctly.

In particular, I am seeing high CPU Utilization and low Read Speed.

As I mentioned, this is an SP4 system now, but the original CD installed
SP1, I believe, and I've since upgraded it through SP2, SP3, and SP4.

In trying to figure out what's going on with the IDE problem, I did a clean
install of Win2K from the CD, and ran HDTach, and got good results (low CPU
Utilization and higher Read Speed), so I think that along the way, something
with the IDE drivers has been messed up.

I've tried deleting the IDE controller in Device Manager, but then it just
re-installs the same driver, and still have the same problem.

I have many apps that would be hard for me to re-install if I was forced to
do a clean install, so I was wondering if there's any way to go back to the
original IDE drivers. I have the original Win2K CD, and also I've imaged my
current Win2K system, so I don't mind doing something risky to try to get
this working correctly.

For example, I've expanded the Driver.cab from the CD, and the original
PCIIDE.SYS, PCIIDEX.sys, and ATAPI.sys are there. Could I try copying them
to my C:\Winnt\system32\drivers directory after booting to DOS (my C:\
partition is FAT32, not NTFS)?

Would that work?

Does anyone else have any other suggestions???

Thanks,
Jim

You might try updating the driver from the manufacturer's web site. Always
be sufficiently backed up prior to doing so.

Hi Dave,

Sorry. I forgot to mention that I've already tried the ALI 1.04 driver from
the mother board manufacturer (Asus), and the ALI 2.05 driver directly from
ALI (www.ali.com.tw), and got the same results.

I tried to do the pci*.* copy from the expanded Driver.cab, BTW, and the
system would boot, but had same problem. The strange thing was that when I
tried copying back the original pci*.* files, and rebooted, I got a STOP
error. I'm now restoring.

I'm getting close to thinking that I may have to bite the bullet, and
re-install Win2K. Like I said, the problem is if I can re-install all my
current apps...
