restore data after windows die (PLEASE)

Dear all,

My windows just died today, cannot go into windows even with safe mode.

I move my hardisk to another pc and still cannot boot into windows.

I want to get back all my outlook data (cause too many emails and contacts
are important) and all documents in desktops. But I cannot access
x:\Documents and Settings\Johnson

My system is :

Windows XP pro
Outlook 2003

Thanks!

If you cannot access the HDD, and you did not make a backup, then it is very
unlikely that you can recover your data. I know this is bad, but you have
just learned a very valuable lesson about backing up your data.

Type "take ownership" into the search box in help and Support - you need to
take ownership of the files on the new machine so that you can access them.

Make the unbootable disk the SECONDARY disk in the second machine. Then
you can copy your data. The file you want os called outlook.pst.

Fine Print:

-This assumes your disk hasn't failed completely.

-The second machine should be the same version of Windows, or later.

-Outpook is a "hidden" file (Curse You, Bill Gates!!). You have to set your
Explorer settings to see it. Suggest an alternative; Use
a DOS shell;

Start>Run>cmd.exe
Make he drive you are trying to recover from the current drive i.e. E:
CD \
dir /s outlook.pst

You may find more than one file. Look at file size and date stamps to
see which one is your data. Notice the folder part your PST file is
in. CD to it can copy your PST to the systems's C drive and burn it
into a CD, or something.

You can recover your documents the same way.

XP REPAIR
.............................................................................

Boot from the CD or you can insert the CD while at the windows desktop but
when the setup screen appears, exit setup and reboot. If your system is set
to be able to boot from the CD, it should detect the disk and give a brief
message, during the boot up, if you wish to boot from the CD press any key.

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you to
press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement. Setup
will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding your
version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current installation or
install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair installation. From there
on, follow the screens.
