I'm running XP (SP2), and my computer frequently restarts at random times.
On the next successful reboot(if it didn't restart at least twice, while
rebooting), I send a report to Microsoft. They say it's a device driver,
but can't provide a solution to the problem.

Can anyone tell me an easy way to find out which device driver is the
culprit, and what I should do to solve the problem.

Thanks.

Hi

Try this to see what the problem may be:

Right click on My Computer, select Properties and then the Advanced tab.
Click on Settings under Startup and Recovery and disable 'Automatically
restart'. Next time your PC reboots, you should see a Blue Screen. Could
you please post the Stop Code that accompanies that BSOD back here? With
that your problem could be isolated.

I suggest you Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should
help by allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click
on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
StartUp and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Enable automatic restart on system failure after you have captured /
copied and pasted the message in a further post here.

There will also be Error Reports in Event Viewer. Please post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for responding to my post. Here's the technical information.

STOP: 0X0000008E (0XC0000005, 0XEB3D96AF, 0XEB607340, 0X00000000)
GBFSHook.SYS ADDRESS EB3D96AF base at EB3D9000, Datestamp 41C865FA

I believe that's a Symantec product. Is this info enough to solve the
problem?
What's the next step?

Thanks for all your help!

Yes it is referring to a file associated with Goback.

There are a number of reports bit no solutions in Google. What are
you doing in the period before the error occurs?

What Warning and Error Reports are in Event Viewer occurring about
the time when the problem arises.. Please post copies.

Thanks for responding to my post. I have not been able to resolve this stop
error problem. I contacted Symantec, but they were unable to give me a
solution. When I check the event viewer I don't see any reference to
GBFSHook.sys. Recently, the blue screen error occured three times during
successive restarts, and is the same one referenced in an earlier post. The
event viewer shows a system error around the time that the stop error
occured.

That message is:

-- Event Type: Error
Event Source: System Error
Event Category: (102)

0050: 30 30 30 30 0000

There seems to be no correlation between the STOP ERROR message, and any
particular event.

I hope this info can shed some light on the problem. Is it a software, or
device driver problem. If so, how can I figure out what it is, and resolve
this issue?

Thanks for your help.

Do you have a standalone version of Goback or is it part of Norton System
Works? What versions?

Is your computer multi boot or single boot? Goback is not suited for a
system has more than one version of Windows installed?

I'm running GoBack 4.0 as part of Norton System Works 2005. My system is
single boot. I have a separate hard drive ( D: ) with some Windows 98
stuff, but I never access it. I boot to XP Pro from the C: drive. That's
where GoBack is installed. I don't think there is anything on drive D: to
affect GoBack.

Thanks, again.

Your system is dual booting, even if you access your D drive infrequently.
The MBR is on your C drive and the boot.ini file contains the switch option.

Uninstall Norton System Works and see if that resolves the problem.

The other option is to uninstall and reinstall Norton System Works
http://snipurl.com/lvp3

You need to be aware that Norton products are notoriously difficult to
remove.
There are many free alternatives.
